Not a Bad Day (Revd Neville Watson) 17.8.2008
Reading: Matthew 15:21-28
Some have suggested that Jesus was having a bad day. We all have bad days. Some of us even have bad Sundays. It is an interesting thought but I doubt if this is what this passage is about.
It is rather a graphic unforgettable shocking story to point up the universal significance of Jesus of Nazareth. To be sure the story starts with the Jews as a people chosen by God to prepare the way – and Jesus spent a lot of time trying to convince the Jews that the Kingdom of God was at hand. What the woman does is to remind us of the essential nature of our faith - that it goes beyond race and nationalism. 'There is neither Jew nor Greek, bond or free, male or female – all are one in Christ Jesus'.
This story remains a shocking story. It is almost like me asking, 'Why is it so important for the nation of Australia to win gold medals at the Olympics?' What is so important about Georgia keeping control over Osettia?
The Christian faith goes beyond nationalism as the story of the Canaanite woman so vividly reminds us.
