Talents - A 60 Second Sermon (Revd Neville Watson) 16.11.2008
The Parable of the Talents is perhaps the most misunderstood parable of all. To read it as an endorsement of establishment economics and present day hedge funds is to miss the point completely.
The third guy is a whistle blower. He spells out his contempt for the system and says to the master 'I know you to be a harsh man who reaps what you have not sown Ė so I buried your money Ė and you know what, it didnít grow! It isnít fertile. It isnít productive of the good life.' The whistle blower suffers the consequences and after being accused of being lazy and worthless by the hedge fund manager he is kicked out of the system. After all everyone knows how the world operates Ė those who have will get more. Its money that makes money! Not in the third guys book - the anti hero - who is line ball with Jesus saying that you cannot worship God and money. The love of money is indeed the root of much evil and to fix oneís hopes on such an uncertain thing as money is to miss out on what life is all about.
I only hope the G20 participants get the picture!
